Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Thanks Gary. All the credit on this can goes to Jim Hall. He gave me the lead on which a long and friendly bridge was built that culminated in acquiring the can. To tell the truth, I had no idea the can was in such wonderful condition until I took it out of the box. Closing in on 300!!!!!!crowntainer-central wrote: ↑Sat Mar 27, 2021 12:26 pm Congrats on that Southern Select Bill! What a a beauty. I'm still looking for a upgrade for my off-grade.

Ok, id like to know what everyone thinks, i have neither the time or dumping partners so cruise ebay buying cans ive always admired. As a kid i had a story and memory of every one of the 3000 plus cans i had collected. Today i have 400 cones and flats but not many stories of aquiring them.

Poking around some antique shops today and found a few items. Wound up coming home with a pre-prohibition pint bottle, a couple of painted label 7 ounce bottles, and common tray at the right price.

Pick up whatever makes you happy. I had stories for the 3000+ cans too as a a kid. Wish I could remember more than 5 of those stories NOW! Time flies and you only live once. Enjoy the ride!!!Hotrodder wrote: ↑Sat Mar 27, 2021 8:04 pm Ok, id like to know what everyone thinks, i have neither the time or dumping partners so cruise ebay buying cans ive always admired. Wow those are some sweet quarts, always loved those Brucks cans.
Got these 2 today, posting them because it is the first crowntainer I ever had and the first OD. Always loved the Gluek's cans, I think I may start a side collection of them.

There was one at the Blue Gray for sale. Not quite as nice but still indoor and decent. Wish I could remember who had it for you.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
I needed the brown text Lager can, which I purchased. The white can was an upgrade. I may have liked the Snappy Ale that was the bright colored background but wasn’t feeling chasing a color variation. I have two variations of the Snappy Ale and am fine with that as far as color goes. As for Old Topper cans go, I would love to stumble across a Bock in decent shape, and upgrade the one 8 have, could upgrade my green and silver Ale can, otherwise, pending a new variation, I think I am set.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
I arrived home from BG / ST minutes ago, and my pre-show warmup can from Morean Auctions was waiting for me. Photos don't do it justice - the colors are phenomenal and you don't see the smaller spots at all with the can in hand.

Great can and the combination with the Silver Dime on the shelf is an accomplishment most collectors will never have or see in person!
I think this was an old picture of part of your earlier collection.
That Chester looks pretty darn clean too actually.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Thanks! One aspect of specialization that never dawned on me until it started happening is, people will funnel you the cans you're looking for. I knew almost nobody outside my area when I began doing this, but it snowballed in a hurry and I just happened to get to know a few guys who directed or fed several of the toughest labels my way. The Chester in the snippet you posted from the 2010 photo is one of several cans I got from Don Santora in 1998 or 1999 and was a significant upgrade for the one I won in the BCCA auction at Arkansas Canvention. I had never met Don or heard his name. Dave Lewandowski called Don because Don was selling his 12 oz. cans and Dave knew Don had the Lebanon Valley I needed. I met up with Don at Blue/Grey the following week and found that he had set aside a few other cans for me to look at. I had picked up an Esslinger's Ale quart flat OI Don needed, so we did a trade/cash deal and I took all of them. I was amazed and still am. The Chester from Don is certainly no slouch, but it benefitted in that photo from being left of center, being in a wide shot, and from being shot with a lower resolution camera. Here are some tighter shots alongside the new one.Clarkston1 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 18, 2021 9:29 am Great can and the combination with the Silver Dime on the shelf is an accomplishment most collectors will never have or see in person!

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
Sure. This one comes with a story too. I had only been back into the hobby for a couple years when I bought a collection of better tabs in good condition and dumper flats. I set up with a buddy at Toledo and created a feeding frenzy for a few hours. Once the dust cleared, I saw a tote on the table behind me filled with ongrade cans like Black Eagle, Eureka (flat and cone), and others of that caliber. We had never seen cans of that magnitude, and struck up a conversation with the guys - Bob McCoy and his dad. When it came time for the next Ft. Wayne show, I got the nerve up to give Bob a call and ask if I could see his collection. We hit it off really well and became friends, and from then on I'd go over once or twice a year to talk cans and see his mind-blowing collection, which included this Silver Dime. Dick Caughey bought the can when the original six were found and stated it was the best of the six when he featured it in a Can Close-Up article. He later sold it to Chet Bartol. Bob McCoy and his dad subsequently purchased Chet's cones - 225 LP's and 59 J-Spouts, loaded with rarities and virtually all ongrade. When Bob sold his collection, he sold it as a group but offered me this one. I rank it up with the Bocks as far as eye appeal, and it's therefore a prime example of why I chose to collect the J-Spouts.

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
I recently aquired this can off ebay and was curious why a high profile cone would have a flat bottom?
Is this a legit cone? Any rarity here?

Re: New Acquisition Wednesday
American Can Co. got into cones later than Continental Can Co. and Crown Can Co. - 1938 or so, and they used high profile cones and flat bottoms. Esslinger's used them for the earlier yellow cones and the Ale that matches your can. Two versions of Tam O' Shanter Ale and Beer, A Gunther's Ale and two Gunther's Beers, and a Hornung's Beer also exist. I feel like I'm missing one . . .
I believe the green Ale to match your Beer is the toughest of the Esslinger's, but it's interesting that the various dealer/auction sites list sold examples of all of them except the red Beer. I also hadn't really noticed that the USBC shows four variations of the red cone, three of them are offgrade, and the only one re-shot for the BCCA online supplement is the best condition can from the book and is the same example was re-shot to get the five views.
I know it's a good can, but I'll leave it to cone experts to provide detailed information as to how good.
