Anyone have information on this Burgermeister sign?

#1

Post by Mrbelvedere2 »

Hi guys I just came across this neat Burgermeister sign. It is a little over 4ft long, It has a metal body, front with the writing is plastic, has that 1950's look, I have never seen one before. I took it apart since it was missing a cord and it looks like there is rollers where a scroll of some sort rolled behind the Burgermeister logo to give it some motion, which is long gone. Has anyone seen these before and have any information on it?

Although your sign is longer than the majority of that style, the "rolling color wheel" signs were used by a number of brewers in the 50's. One manufacturer of these signs used glass faces while the others used plastic. All types seem to have steel cases.

Some of the brewers to use these signs are Burgermeister, Buckeye, Dixie, Narragansett and Lone Star, plus a number of others I can't think of right now. These are hard to find in working condition and usualy the only way to restore one is to find a donor sign. The more common versions sell for around $250 and they go up from there.

I had a "rolling color wheel" burgermeister sign the same size as the ones Mike showed. Never seen one as large as yours before.

Cool sign!

Probably the one I see the most is the Old Style Lager version. Braumeister has one too.

Neat sign! Bummer that it is missing the scroller. I have and had 2 smaller version of that sign and I'm pretty Khowledagble on Burgermeister but I have never seen it. Maybe Burgie Dave can chime in and share his expertise?

Red Top has one too it scrolls very slowly. The Old Style also comes with a white background. The buckeye actually appears to roll at a 45 degree angle but its an illusion. There are two small ones, a Burger in the shape of a multi-pointed star, and a Blitz. I think the best one color wise is the Naragansett, absolutely amazing motion.

Nice score as this version is not often seen. Of nearly a dozen motion signs from this brand (which I once had) your example is unknown to me. "Flavor that sparkles" seems more directed toward soda advertising.
Suspect this piece was specific to bars and taverns as the motion ad would capture attention of those passing by. This allure was not accepted in every state due to their specific laws on how their alcohol laws were established. Some states allowed clocks with beer advertising and some didn't, etc.
Hope you can find a parts piece which you can gut and have a properly running motor. Possibly another member has one which works and can help you out. Good luck.

Thanks for the information burgiedave! I was able to get it to light up, but the motor is dead and I am trying to figure out something I can use for a scroll to at least diffuse the light somewhat, as right now as it's lit up you can see the flourescent light behind it.

If you can't find the parts you need and are willing to spend a bundle, bring it to the Las Vegas show and leave it at Rick's Restoration. Depending on how busy they are and how difficult the parts neeed will be to find, expect up to a year before you see it again. The good news is, he might want to film you and you get yourself on TV!

Good suggestion John H. I watch his show a lot and visited his place when I was in Las Vegas last time...I just don't think I can afford his services! Plus I like working on stuff myself......
