Need some help
My wife and I have a good friend who manages a bar in Manhattan, NY. She want to revamp her beer menu, both draft and bottled and asked for help. I've attached the current drink menu to show what is being offered. She is looking for different beer ideas that her New York City patrons might have knowledge of already. I'd appreciate some inputs on NorthEast beers that already have a good following that she could offer.
Thanks in advance!
Brad

Re: Need some help
Maybe try some of those beer recipes on the sides of the esslinger OI cans, perhaps as appetizers. As was mentioned in a previous post, many breweries can out with small booklets that provided recipes that either used the beer as an ingredient, or were good to serve with beer. I know Ruppert issued such a booklet.

Well, they're missing Sixpoint from Brooklyn. Awesome stuff in either can or draft. Rather fond of The Crisp and Sweet Action myself, but they also have a lot of interesting beers on tap only, including some pretty crunchy IPA's which go over big with the hipsters.

Re: Need some help
That's a fancy little collection of suds.
I notice the only lager on the docket is "toasted." How about good old Yuengling? Maybe that's a bourgeois-sounding suggestion, but that brewery has earned its reputation the old fashioned way (with consistent quality and flavor appeal) and it doesn't call to mind any single demographic. It's just popular stuff across the board - a tasty, medium-bodied American lager that everybody has taken a liking to in a big hurry. Might be a decent addition for those who simply want a dependable beer and aren't feeling overly adventurous.
And I see they have Abita Light. That immediately brought Turbodog to mind, despite the fact that it's not an eastern product. I don't know what the availability in New York would be. Might be a fun "format" to throw into the mix: dark and sort of...what's the best word? Aggressive? Menacing? But not necessarily "heavy." Like most of the others on that menu, it would definitely assert its own character.

Re: Need some help
What about some Brooklyn Brewery beers/ales? Their Pilsener, lager and Pennant Ale are real yummy. They make some real good stuff and it's local to the city..
Thanks. Dave

Anything from Brewery Ommegang out of Cooperstown. High end American-brewed Belgian beers. Hennepin Farmhouse Saison is their best selling brand.

Re: Need some help
Being a big fan of the Belgians myself, I recommend two entries from Flying Fish Brewing in Somerdale NJ. Their Exit 4 is an American Trippel (10.2 ABV), and their Belgian Abbey Dubbel weighs in at around 7.2 ABV. Both are fantastic, complex beers.
That being said, I went to a tasting of beers from the DuClaw Brewery out of Baltimore this weekend, and they had some pretty interesting stuff. Two that I was sure I would hate were the Sweet Baby Jesus (6.5 ABV), a Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter, and The Double Naked Fish (7.6 ABV), an Imperial Chocolate Raspberry Stout. They were both actually fantastic, the chocolate peanut butter stout the clear favorite of everyone I was with. Their Bad Moon Porter (somewhere around 5.5 ABV, I was getting a little hazy at that point) was also exceptional.
I could go on for several more pages about great beers (I love beer, in case you hadn't noticed), but I'll let others chime in.
