Raiding Roy's Room!
Best deals are from Roy...!
Cans piled to be bought.
Steve Gresham....the Luckiest Ba$-tard around!
All in all a great show....one of the main highlights was a 30s/40s/50s collection (all bottomed opened and mint) that Steve brought to the show.... Roy cherry-picked some killer cans but there was enough to go around. And there's more coming. Next big California Show is the Watsonville Show (68 miles south of San Francisco on the Pacific Ocean) Saturday Nov 1st...don't miss this one or you be soRRy!

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
Mesquite NV. We had no idea this is where the stand off is occurring between the rancher & BLM. Saw a compound of law enforcement just outside of the city, and on the way back, BLM vehicles filling up their trucks in St. George UT. I noticed the BLM guys all wearing Kevlar vests, Tasers & 9mm's. Now I know why!
Pics from the show.
We drove into the teeth of a spring blizzard on the way back to CO. Added 4 1/2 hours to an already long drive.

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
I had a large time at the show. Drove down to ABQ and drove over w/CMD. No casino wins this year, but I did put down $20 on the Broncos to win the Super Bowl. John H.'s display was something to see. Uncle Roy was 'da man, as far as what I picked up. He also proved to be 'da man when he saved a novice collector from getting ripped off. The guy had been low-balled on an estimate given to him on a can that he'd brought to the show. After the low ball estimate, he later asked Uncle Roy about the value of the can. Roy's estimate was roughly 4 times that of the low ball. The guy was very grateful for Roy's input and as a result, did some hefty biz with Roy. Good guys do win in the end.......and always remember "your cash ain't nothing but trash".
A great big shout out to Corry. She did an excellent job, and had to put up with stupid people, entitled people and just plain dumbasses for weeks prior to the show and during the course of the show. Thank you Corry.
Not the best can I picked up, but certainly one of my new favorite cans. The can was rolled from duct work, obviously never filled, but very cool and so much different than a 39-117.

Great set of pictures. Thanks. Have seen that Heileman's piece several times before (when I see it in the antique malls, they never have the cigarettes in it though ). It can be found with not too much effort here in Wisconsin.

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
Yes. There were 2 different styles of tabs in it, and most were bottom opened. CMD split it with another guy, but gave me the cardboard holder since I pointed it out to him. I'll even up with him at the ABQ show in a few weeks.

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
I'm the one that found the two 6 packs of coors tabs back in 1998, I sold one full 6 to the guy in FL who used to collect only 6 packs. The other was broken up and went to Colorado collectors. I found them with about 500 bud tabs in the ceiling of an abandoned barracks at Shepard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX when I was stationed there. Had no idea of how rare they were when I found them

I may be opening myself up to a beating here..... But calling fellow collectors entitled, stupid and dumbasses as well as saying cash is trash is no way to build a show. That attitude is one if the reasons I did not come back this year. We all have our beer fueled stupid moments don't we? It one if the things that makes our hobby funny. Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
Steve is not only lucky at dumping (he'd win Lucky Dumper almost every year if he were a RB member) but he has a knack at finding indoor collections all the time. Roy contracts Steve out to get everything he digs and finds. This collection had cans that grandpa collected in the 30s (bottoms cut out) and then his son collected cans in the 50s (almost all bottomed opened.) From what I saw, mostly California but also contained minty Rainier Jubes and cans from back east. And he only brought 100 or so from the collection to the show...there's another 500+ cans!OctoberAle wrote:I'm curious about the Luckiest Ba$-tard's collection score…what kinds of labels did it contain?

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
The Coors steel tabs are not necessarily rare, as they can be found every so often on ebay & shows. What IS rare is the cardboard holder with the "Ring Pull" logo on it! As previously mentioned, there are 4 documented tab variations for the can.

Edward Steve IS a member of the Rusty Bunch and as been for a couple of years along with Chris and Larry. Steve is really evil to dig with though. He doesn't believe in allowing poor old geezers on Social Security to get their appropriate beer breaks - if it was up to Steve roy would be getting 1 semi-beer (Coors Lite) about once a day!!! We do have plans for an area in May. roy (small r)

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
Here is my take from the Las Vegas show. The Golden Harvest was a big upgrade (thanks Rich), The Value Lines, Sierra flat and the Brew 52 came from rOY & are all upgrades. The Sierra cone came from a fine gentleman name Lauren Love and is a new shelf can. The Bull Dog came from Jim D and is a new can. The Lucky is actually a can that a good rusty friend worked on for me and gave back to me at the show. Not technically a can from the show but my favorite can to come home with me. The other cans are ones I picked up from rOy during the after show feeding frenzy in his room. roY had a great show and spread the love by giving everyone deals that they could not pass up... so I did not pass them up. Psychic Baseball is a card game from the 1920's that just called my name. -Mike

Re: Beer Can Fun in Vegas!
I always have a great time at this show... it never fails. We had obvious lower numbers this year which is unfortunate but I sold a ton of stuff (I was ready to unload stuff this show). I also was able to buy a bunch of stuff as shown above plus a couple oil signs. ADDITIONALLY, I came out about $300 ahead in the casino. I was able to pull Steve Gresham away from black jack to play craps and he made about 5x what I did in the casino as well, so once again, we left with a bunch of the casinos money.... seems to happen every year.
One of the challenges of a Vegas show is that most people seem to fly in. When people fly, they bring very little with them. Steve and I drove 10 hours with a truck full of stuff. I know Scott Rollert drove much further than that... The Reno guys drove about 7 hours... There just is not a ton of guys driving in with stuff to sell, which hurt the room to room. Though, I must say, being one of the few rooms open at times had its advantages and I moved a ton of stuff. Thanks Ed for buying all my oil stuff... you got a great deal, but I didn't have haul it back home.
It was really nice to make the rounds and talk to everyone this year. SoCal Steve came out to his first show and is a really interesting guy with a great collection. Was good to meet him and many other new faces, like Gene Judd. Many of us had what I thought was a really great talk in Jim Dermodys room with regards to what the show needs and what could be done about it in the future. It's unfortunate that this will probably be the last Vegas show for now. Corry is not going to be doing it again & even though the rumor spread that I was taking on the show again, I just can't do it without about 5 core people helping out. It would take a person each handling the auction, raffle, trade floor, hospitality, beer, hotel contact/contract, poker, advertising, etc. I could do some of that, but not all of it. Its easy doing a bunch of things poorly, but I'd rather do one or two things well.
And, I just want to mention that I know some people felt like outsiders last year. I hope that nobody had that experience this year. A few of us really tried hard to welcome everyone & I think we all had a great time because of it. If this show does happen again, it would be great for everyone to give it another shot.
Hopefully some folks will step in and make it happen!
Mike

I will freely admit that the primary reason I came to the Western States show was because there was a BCCA Board Meeting there. Other than one drunken night in Laughlin and a night spent at the Las Vegas airport due to the Los Angeles riots, I had never spent a night in the state of Nevada prior to this trip. Another contributing factor was that the old Las Vegas shows were legendary among some of the "senior members" of the Jersey Shore Chapter, who used to *drive* to these shows back in the day. I am not really a gambler - the extent of my gambling is that I was about $1.00 down on video poker and bet $10 on the Giants to win the Super Bowl at 35-1.
I did spend a fair amount of time wandering around finding brewpubs and a few nature stops with Jim Wolf, since I don't get out west much. It was great seeing Ed S., John Smoller, and the Oregon guys again, and meeting some of the legends of the RB/hobby such as rOY, Scott Rollert, Mike Wilbur, Steve Gresham etc. for the first time (at least that I remember). I certainly did not feel like an oustsider.
Because of all of my wanderings, a few meetings, and the fact that I had to fly out on Saturday evening, I missed out on a lot of the good stuff that was available. I still did OK can wise and picked up quite a few microbrewery coasters as well.
A couple of years from now I will probably be doing more travelling to shows, and I certainly would like to hit at least one out west. And I'm not counting CANvention 2016, which I hope will be in Portland.
Here is my take. Mostly upgrades. The Hedrick ziptop from Albany, NY came from Dick Johnson and its one that I've been trying to find for a long time.

I feel bad every show because it seems like everyone else can tell you guys apart and I have no idea. I don't even know how to greet you guys when I see you when you don't have name badges on...
