Couple Foster's Lager Questions

#1

Post by pinnacle-project »

The weather is finally warm enough so that I could pull some cans out of storage and start to sort them. I was not able to dig my way back to the original collection yet but I did spend a couple hours sorting through random cans I picked up over the years.

Back in the 70s and 80s and remember Foster's Lager quart cans being extremely common. I do not remember ever seeing a soft flat top like the one below. Is it incredibly common too? Why would they suddenly abandon the tab top in favor of a flat top? Any ideas?

Also, I had a student once who was doing a paper/presentation on Australian culture. He was ex-military and had been stationed in Australia for a while. He said in Australia, Foster's Lager is for tourists and English immigrants. A native Australian will not touch Foster's Lager no matter how desperate for a beer. True or not? This question is probably more for aussieguinnessman.

Anyway, here is the can.

I don't know the answer, but a Foster's Lager was the only foreign can I had in my collection as a child in my early teens!

Thanks. That answers the soft top question.

Now, I just need to know if anyone in Australia drinks Foster's Lager other than tourists and English immigrants.

Not being an Australian, so my expertise my be questionable, but....I have heard the same story as well. Fosters was not really consumed in Australia, it's biggest market was overseas. Just what I have heard over the years.

The Foster's in the USA is not from Australia. For a while it was brewed in Canada, then a few years ago went to Miller at Ft. Worth and Albany, Georgia. Of course it is all brewed under supervision.

Not to hijack this thread but a lot of other imports are now brewed in the USA such as Beck's and Bass Ale. Some Guiness is brrewed in Canada, not Ireland.

They also sold Fosters oil cans with aluminum soft top lids briefly in Virginia when that state banned pull tabs. I guess it took the can companies longer to get around to manufacturing stay-tabs for what was not a standard US can size.
