ROSALIE

#1

Post by bobbyboy »

Does anyone recall that in the early 1980's a Rosalie was sold to a Japanese collector for something like $10 - $12,000? I could swear I read it listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in that same period as the highest price ever paid for a beer can. If true, I wonder what became of the can. This was in the years where Japan was BOOMING and rich guys and corporations were paying insane prices for art, rare watches, etc. They were paying prices that had no rhyme or reason and they often took huge losses when they re-sold the items. There was a case where a corporation paid like 50 million for a painting that was worth about 10 million. We all know that there are all sorts of treasures locked away.

Never heard that story but one did sell very high in the 80's but stayed here in this country.
Another one sold on ebay around 2000 for just over 10K but also stayed in this country. Those are the biggest dollar clean ones I know of that changed hands.

So how many 'clean' cans of this label are known? I know there has been discussion on this topic before, and I know that there was a picture of a Rosalie re-painted with the wrong 'A' font.

Good question.....Here is what I know...

1) The First Rosalie was found by Clay Tischner(sp?) back in the late 60's or early 70's along w/the Tiger OI. It was the CLASSIC BAR collection from the 1930's.
2) 5 dumpers were found in the early 80's in east Texas near a fire station..condition was poor, but the first time any of these cans had been found. WOW!
3) Dan Bakers find in La. in 1999(gr 1-) ...It is a great story how this can was found!
4) Back in the late 70's...well this is how the story goes...A non collector brought 3 on grade or so Rosalie's to a Chicago beer can show and wanted alot of money for these cans. The collectors passed for some reason(maybe the price) and the non collector left and these cans were never seen again.
5) That's all I know of...2 indoor/5 dumpers and 3 missing.

Later...Brent G. :smt023

I recall that Howard Jones, a dealer from Texas if memory serves, brought a Rosalie to the Mardi Gras Chapter show one year probably back in the early '90s. He also had a Tiger (the rare one, not the Jax one). They were for display only, but everyone there got a good close look at both cans. Closest I've ever been to any cans that rare. As I recall, the Rosalie was less than mint, maybe a little cleaner than the one Rand pictured.

I had 3 of the 5 dumper Rosalies at one time. The one that Rand has is the first one I ever had. I got that one from Herman back in 1987 and got kicked-off ebay when I listed that can - the winning bidder/buyer never paid and I went off one him in an email after 45 days of non-payment - he then sent that email to ebay and we were both suspended indefinetly. I got back on after a few months of explaining my case. I traded another one to the Lew Bros that has a huge hole in the side that now has a clear patch. I think that can is in a collection in Louisiana.

So last night I was looking through the Lilek o/I book, and I realize that per my earlier post about a picture of a Rosalie with the wrong font was actually in the book, not on a thread or post. My apologies to the masses for confusing the issue. But my actual point still stand. Anyway, this thread seems to have settled on the fact that there are about 5 dumper cans out there. Interestingly, in the book the author speculates that 10 off grade are known. Now I know that sometimes his numbers are a little off, since some of them are guesses or speculation. It is interesting that he posits that more are "known" than is assumed today, nearly a decade after he wrote the commentary.

Thanks to all for all of the great info. I have mentioned before that I first saw a Rosalie in 1976 at a Chicago Area can show. I believe it was at a big show held at the now defunct and torn down Olde Chicago indoor amusement park and shopping mall in Bolingbrook Ill. The mystery dealer also had a Little Imp, Soul (Malt and Mellow Yellow) as well as a set of 007's. That was the very first time I saw such rarities. It was the first time I became aware such rare cans existed. I remember the Rosalie being some crazy (at the time price) like $1000. I could not even fathom such a price for a beer can.I seem to recall the Soul's and James Bond cans being priced at something like $100. Might as well have been $1000. I was making maybe $2 an hour. Minimum was $1.35.

Let's see, a $100 Soul would have cost me 50 hours of working. So today, If one is making $20/hr it would cost $1000. I guess those Souls and 007's were expensive for 1976.

I went to one of those shows at the Old Chicago! Lived down in central Illinois at the time. My dad drove me up there and thought I was crazy. I bought three dumper conetops (still have them displayed) for much more money than they were ever worth. SOMEONE made a bunch of money off me. But, it was my money and my dad let me make my mistakes. Anyway, I was such a saver anyway, he was surprised when I actually SPENT any of my money.
Don't really remember much about the show other than it was at the Old Chicago mall.

Ahhhh, so you were the guy I sold those crusty cones too? Back then we were not the good guys we were the BAD GUYS! I am kidding of course.

I too saw a Rosalie at a local show, it was a really nice dumper or a off grade indoor can. The guy had it displayed in a wooden case with glass around it. This guy told me he found three of them and Rockford Illinois. I was at that show with Kelly Thomle and Tony steffin and they don't remember seeing it but I know I saw it.

I was always of the opinion that the Tiger OI Beer Can was much more desirable and much more sexier than the Rosalie OI Beer Can.

I remember first hearing about the sale of the Tiger and Rosalie OI Beer Cans back in early 1980; I recall the story as follows:

Jim Garard had both the Tiger and Rosalie OI Beer Cans in his extensive U.S. cone and flat top beer can collection. When Jim Garard's son passed away from leukemia, Ken White was called in to handle the sale of the extensive Gerard Beer Can Collection.

As I recall the events from that period in time, the publishers of Beer Can's Monthly and owners of Maverick Publishing Company (Robert Dabbs and Jerry Lamb) purchased both the Tiger and Rosalie OI Beer Cans for $6000.00 each or a total of $12,000.00 which was a mind-boggling number back during the early spring of 1980.

I believe that the sale of the Garard Beer Can Collection along with the sale of the Tiger and Rosalie Beer Cans took place and occurred in an an auction type sales format during the Maverick Beer Can Show that was hosted at the Baltimore Convention Center back during the spring of 1980.

I was 19 years old back during the spring of 1980 and given the fact that It's been almost 35 years since Ken White auctioned off the Garard Beer Can Collection during the spring of 1980, it is quite possible that my recollection of events might be incorrect so if anyone else can add to the stores chain of events that would be great.

Bill Bacandreas bought both the Tiger and the Rosalie to use as promotional tools for his business, which was called the "Cans of the month" club.
