Re: LABOR DISPUTE AT Western States Beer Show HOST HOTEL
Dear Dan Scoglietti,
We are writing to let you know about the on-going labor dispute at Palace Station and other Station Casinos properties in Las Vegas, Nevada. Palace Station is the scheduled location for the Western States Beer Show by your organization. As a future customer of Station Casinos, the Brewery Collectibles Club of America should be concerned about the possibility that future visits to Palace Station may be affected by rallies and protests arising from the company’s labor dispute with the Culinary Union Local 226, the largest labor union in Las Vegas.
Since March, 2010, thousands of union casino workers and community allies have demonstrated against Station Casinos’ anti-worker behavior, occasionally resulting in mass arrests. Sending your customers and members to Palace Station may force them to have to choose between either (1) supporting workers by not patronizing Palace Station or (2) trying to ignore a large-scale protest outside the casino. You might be blamed for the unpleasant experience of your customers at Palace Station.
Station Casinos has been waging an aggressive, expensive and illegal campaign against its workers for over two years. The company has been found to have broken U.S. federal labor law eighty-eight (88) times, according to two National Labor Relations Board Administrative Law Judges. That is the largest number of unfair labor practices committed by a single employer in the history of Nevada gaming.
(The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has unanimously and completely rejected the company’s appeals. As ordered by the NLRB, the company has posted a Notice to Employees to inform workers of their rights and what the company will or will not do to comply with the NLBR’s broad cease-and-desist order. The company may still appeal to federal court.)
While the company claims 26% of its workforce is Latino or Hispanic, nearly 80% of the Unfair Labor Practices found by the NLRB judges involved Latino workers. Moreover, Station Casinos has fired ten worker organizers so far, and eight of them are Latino. (Three have been brought back to work after charges were filed with the NLRB.)
On March 22, 2012, Station Casinos workers presented the company with a public petition for a fair process that was signed by a majority of the company’s workers in job classifications of UNITE HERE Culinary Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165. Over 4,000 people, including local clergy, participated in a rally at Red Rock to support the workers’ demand. The petition reads, in part:
We demand that Station Casinos Ownership and Management respect our signatures and agree to a fair process for us to decide whether to have union representation without management interference and intimidation.
The company has ignored the workers’ demand. When twelve of the company’s workers engaged in a seven-day fast in April to publicize the workers’ struggle, Station Casinos dismissed it as a “disingenuous” publicity stunt.
Station Casinos workers are calling on Station Casinos customers for support. We urge you to sign the enclosed petition and stop giving financial support to the company’s anti-union attacks by sending customers to Palace Station or any of its other casinos.
I look forward to the opportunity to speak more with you about this critical situation.
Sincerely,
Ian Collins

Re: STRIKE AT WESTERN STATES BEER CAN SHOW HOTEL
I worked at a resort in Hawaii as a Guest Services Manager and had a very unique experience of having HALF the hotel union and HALF Non-union. Having seen both sides on the same property and in the same conditions, the NON-union side was MUCH better for the employees as well as the Hotel....................

Re: STRIKE AT WESTERN STATES BEER CAN SHOW HOTEL
That's one side of a story and very vague. Since there are no specific mentions of what the hotel has done that is so horrible, I don't think a "right" or "wrong" side to this argument could be ascertained from the information provided. So - I will go to the show and wrecklessly spend my money on cans. If they're not serving food... well.. there's plenty of better places to find food in Vegas.

Re: STRIKE AT WESTERN STATES BEER CAN SHOW HOTEL
Ya, I got it and I am po'd. I responded with an email and a phone call to Ian (got his voice mail).
My main concern, as a customer, is how they got my email address. If they got it off the reservation system, there will be hell to pay.
My best friend from college is an attorny and lives in Palm Springs, is recently retired and live this kind of thing.
If they simply got me because I am the V.P and can be found on our web site, well........that's probably OK and resourcfull on there part.
This is a little tricky.....and as a representative of the BCCA, I need to withhold saying too much till I get all the facts, especially from our show organizers.
Let me touch base with the show organizers and try and see what (if anything) can or should be done. Please don't contact them directly and stir the pot.
I am sure they are sending this type of email to thousands and thousands of people. Nothing we do or don't do is going to change the situation.
In the meantime............I already made a reservation..........and intend to go and have a good time.
Give me a few days to figure this out.

I got the e-mail too. I assume they got my e-mail address from the BCCA website. I forwarded it to John H, Corry and Dan S. Obviously, Dan got it already.

Awesome. Maybe their letter will keep eveyone away, and the Station Casinos will close and all of those great union folks will lose their jobs.

Re: STRIKE AT WESTERN STATES BEER CAN SHOW HOTEL
UNIONS my lord! Government, automotive, bakery, Hotels / casino, if it has a union it's BS. They are all the same. PATHETIC! While others are looking for more work the unions are doing the opposite and trying to drive it away.

Re: STRIKE AT WESTERN STATES BEER CAN SHOW HOTEL
I usually don't openly state my feelings on unions and I'm sure there are a few union folk on this board, but this all pretty much sums up my feelings. The Palace Station has been trying to stay out of bankruptcy for a few years I believe. It's great to see that the union that is supposed to help their dues paying members are actually working towards putting them out of a job. I just got back from Vegas yesterday and I'm pretty certain we won't go hungry. On another note, anyone see the ferris wheel they are building over by the Hilton? Holy Moses that thing is going to be huge. -Mike

Re: STRIKE AT WESTERN STATES BEER CAN SHOW HOTEL
I'm hoping to make it this year with Rustamust. While I will reserve my comments on unions, I'd like to point out that recent NLRB appointments have been found to have been unconstitutionally appointed. Any rulings that these appointed directors have made in the last 6 months will NOT hold up in court.
With that being said, damn the torpedoes and full speed ahead!!!

I doubt that the threats will interfere with the show. What is disturbing is the extortionist style of shakedown they are threatening the guests with. This is crap as if they expect us to join their cause. Typical union/labor crap that we have come to expect from such unions.
