My 10's

#1

Post by Cantageous »

CIMG0405.JPG
Hello Peoples,

Been on this forum for a few years and feel its time to show some of my favorite cans. I collect anything that strikes me, but i focus on US Gallons and 10oz Us flats. Here is a pic of my 10's. The Busch Slow Cold is the most recent addition followed by the Bud split label. Its getting harder and more expensive to get the ones I'm missing and I have a couple that need lids..ie Dixie & Schlitz. I have a couple descent traders and i will post soon. If you have something i dont and feel like parting with it, please contact me.

Keith

The bud tab is a tab top. I just liked it so much i had to include it..lol
The milwaukee alum is also a tab. That was a remnant of my collection I recovered from the mothers attic, so i felt it hard to part with. I have a few other 10oz tabs that i didnt include in the picture.

The bud squat was a nice catch and a nice upgrade. I will try and post the traders in the correct forum when i get a chance. I really need a schlitz 10oz vanity lid in decent shape and a lid for the dixie. Anyone have a good idead of a cheap 10oz flat i can get for a lid candidate? i want it to be the correct type so i would need to find someone with a 10oz Dixie to post a pic of the lid.

thanks

I like the three squat cans on the top row. I would take any of the three for my collection.
I also tend to like gallons and have some--not as many, but the ones I have almost mirror yours. Nice collection.
Thanks for showing the pics. consider starting a thread in the member profile section with these pics.

Nice 10's!! There's always been something about the 10 ounce cans. They're just cool...

As for a Holy Grail? That Busch "Aged Slow Cold" is no slouch. Neither is the Busch with the red band, although it was never filled. Or heck... the regular 10 ounce Busch flat top is very tough as well!!

And then there's Blatz - you don't see many of them around...

But I'd peg Burgermeister as the Holy Grail if I had to pick one. It's damn near impossible.

I would concur on the Burgie 10 oz. I've got a real nasty one that Carl found on the Cal/Nevada border south of Lake Tahoe mixed in with a bunch of uber-common 11 oz softtops. I've also heard of them coming out of Alaska of all places. I'd say there is less than a case known. One thing nice about it is that it has the big 10 at the top rather than just being a slighly narrower version of an otherwise common can.

Isn't there a Tru-Blu 10 oz. J-spout that's pretty tough?

I figured they were tabs, but he said he collected 10oz flats, so I wanted to see if they were odd balls fixed with flat top lids. For instance, I have a straight steel Hamms can that states easy open aluminum top on the label, but has a zip tab, not a soft top.

The 10oz Busch Flat and Burgie are very very tough to find. I had my claws in a 10oz busch a few years ago, but let it slip by.. oh well
I've never seen the Blatz, it would be cool if someone here could post a pic.

I am curious about some of the aluminum 10's and if they were ever filled with left over softops when the tabs became popular. I dint have any softtop aluminum flats in 10oz, just the Schlitz softtop. By the way I'm looking to upgrade the Schlitz Softtop.. both variations.. so the hunt continues.

Just bought a Delta Radial Arm Saw a few weeks ago and new beer can shelves are on the menue. I'm going for the picture box look, framed out nice.

As far as desirability goes, the two Tru-Blu 10 oz cones probably rank at the top of the 10 oz list. But - they are obtainable, especially if you're not a stickler for condition. I have them both (in very rough shape), but I've never even seen the Burgie in any shape...

If I had to pick one, I guess it would be Budweisier, but even they are not all that common.

One other suggestion is to look for Canadian 10oz Ginger Beer cans on eBay. I believe they are the same size and can be had in decent shape for not a lot of money...

10 oz soda cans are the best bet to get donor 10 oz cans. I currently do not have any. You may want to check with Mike Wilbur. I am not sure if the lid on the 10 oz Dixie is silver or light gold. Just make sure the donor lid matches.

As I recall it, the Dixie 45 ten ounce was never released with a lid. It seems like I've seen a couple that someone put a lid on, but the vast majority of the ones I've seen have all been topless, as is my own. All the extras I've had over the years (I came into like a half case or so at one point in the '90s) have also been topless. There was a story explaining the cans, and I wish I could remember it. I think Dixie only did one run of a few hundred cases, and they gave up on them when the narrower cans caused problems on the canning line. If I"m wrong about any of this, please correct me! It's probably been twenty years since I heard that story.

I may have some tens you're missing- let me get home and dig up my pic of my older ten ounce extras. I'm always ready to trade.

Cantageous, that is a VERY impressive collection of ten ounces! :smt007 Thanks for sharing that picture! New Orleans may be the main place where ten ounce cans caught on (it was some quirk in the tax laws if memory serves), but there are sure enough of them I've never seen around here. I'd love to know where some of them, like the Pabst and the Busch, were sold. Only Busch 10 ounces I ever found were the aluminum ones from the '70s, and I've never seen Pabst 10 ounces at all.

Cool post, and thanks for the picture. Nice little adrenaline rush there.

You already have some great input from the 10oz masters in here. I started saving them a couple years ago, myself, and have lucked into a Blatz but no Busch flats as yet. I've been puffing up my own piddly assemblage with the 10oz Schlitz tabs. Several versions are from Puerto Rico, others from the states, and a wild one popped up on eBay that I missed; where they usually say "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous," there was Spanish text instead. I do recall looking back at it and it sold for a pretty spectacular figure so I'm guessing it's not common.

There are two really tough Schlitz 10oz. cans. Although Schlitz made a number of variations and shipped them to Puerto Rico, there are two versions made under license by Cerveceria India in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Both cans are straight steel 10oz tabs, one has the slogan in English and the really tough version has the slogan in Spanish.

Are these considered US cans???

By the way, I have never seen one of those Dixie 45 10oz cans with a factory installed lid either. However, based on the 12oz cans of the same time period and design, they would have been topped with shiny, silver lids.

I love ten-oz. cans, as I dump them frequently here in Louisiana. Dixie Dave is correct that Louisiana is the epicenter of ten-oz. cans although the reasons that I have heard over the years are quite varied. My best guess is that there was some quirk in the tax laws, or perhaps in the pricing laws which Louisiana had. Basically ten-oz. cans of the premium national brands-Bud, Schlitz, Pabst, Miller sold for the same price as the twelve oz. versions of the local brands and the popular priced brands. Busch was sold almost exclusively in 12-oz cans while Bud was sold almost entirely as ten-oz. cans. I had a state park dump from about 1960 or so and there were probably 100 10-oz Buds for every 12-oz Bud. All Schlitz's from the same time period were ten-oz. I have no idea why Puerto Rico also was a ten-oz. hotspot.

I have dumped several ten-oz. cans that are not in the USBC, probably just because of an oversight. The Bud ten-oz cans were flat-tops into the early 70s in some instances, as I have an eight-city can that's not in the book. I have a Pabst and a Miller not pictured as well. I have a whole mess of Schlitz ten-oz. too but I can't remember if they are all listed or not.

The Busch cans were sold in my hometown. I have newspaper ads from July of '65 listing them for sale.

Tom: Now that is interesting that they sold Busch 10 ounces in Lafayette in 1965. The oldest Busch of any kind I've ever found on my side of the state is an aluminum 10 ounce from the early 70s. If they were sold here before then, I never found one, and neither did my friends (including my lucky buddy who always seemed to find all the obscure and tough stuff). It seems like I recall Busch entering the market shortly after I started collecting in late 1978, but I could be off on that. I found a bunch of the early cans when I visited family in east Kansas and central Missouri in '79 or '80, so I was trying to build a collection of them then. I saw a lot more of that brand when I went out of state. Also never found a Pabst 10 ounce around here in any grade- and believe me, once my friends and I had access to cars, we were all over southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi hunting for cans.

MIke: Thanks for confirming what I was thinking about the Dixie 45 10's. Wasn't familiar with that Spanish-label Schlitz from Puerto Rico. Interesting can. Thanks to oldmoneytexan for the picture!
