Rainier Jubilee collection...

#1

Post by thecannoisseur »

We have our Rainier Jubilee collection almost complete, so I figured I'd share it with you. It's a pretty extensive collection, with nearly every design and color accounted for (at least to my knowledge, anyway). Here's the link:

http://www.thebeercanguide.com/?s=raini ... earch.y=10

We've also nearly completed our new layout and design, which addresses some issues and ideas brought up by you guys and other members of our site such as smaller thumbnails (making pages load much faster), a wishlist, and more extensive member options. Overall i think it's a huge improvement, and I hope everyone else feels the same when I release it officially. We haven't decided on a specific date yet, but it will be very soon. I will announce it the day before, as it will result in some downtime for the site and I want to make sure that all Rusty Bunchers know what's going on that day.

Nice job on your documentation of Rainier Jubiless, but if you to see the most complete collection of Jubs, you need to pay a visit to Scott Field in Portland....

As far as the question as when I will start charging. It will probably occur when I feel we are putting out a product worth charging for. We have a long way to go before I feel we are there. A lot of what you are seeing is just getting our act together. I have a few cool surprises coming soon. Mike

This website is the best source of information around and doesnt charge money... why would you charge money to look at cans all ready in books? I checked out "the beer can guide" website and in my humble opinion its a great resource for non-beer can collectors who have cans to sell to the website dealers - are you partners with Dan M? The true "book values" are outdated by at least 12 years, so not really correct information. Most tough cans are double what the book says while the exotic and rare are 3-10x the book value. Also limiting cans at $1000+ is a dis-service to the non-collector/novice as many $1000+ cans are worth much more than $1000 and even upwards of 5 figures. Say a beginning collector or contractor walks into a show with a Esslinger Bock crowntainer or a gr1+ Neuwellers Bock OI- they did their research, checked the internet and says can is worth over $1000. They sell it for $2000...they got ripped...

Perhaps I dont know the full potential or intentions of that website? A digital guide of 20,000 cans that I could download to my laptop/tablet would be cool, espeically if it would it include all variations, including side panels of every can known...that I would pay money for.

Ed if you have been following the story line you would know they are going to update the prices an furthermore we have been talking about this for a long time. If the bcca did it, would they charge? If you can't see that the pictures are much better quality than the book get the rust out of your eyes. And hey there is more one side shown, DUH

@ Cap-Sealed, Well get your wallet out because it is coming

We will be updating the can values, but as you can probably imagine that is going to be a massive undertaking in itself - even more so than what we are doing now, which is building the database can by can.

As I said before, we have plans for mobile apps that can be downloaded onto smartphones, PDAs, and tablet PCs to go along with the website. But first we have to BUILD THE DATABASE. And by the way, the books that you spoke of cost money as well if I am not mistaken, do they not? And they are outdated the moment they leave the printing press.

This website will be:

A. Ever-growing
B. Constantly updated.
C. Interactive - which means if you don't agree with the info we publish (values, variations, etc.) you can voice your opinion right on the page.

Everyone keeps freaking out when the mention of money is brought up, but anyone who is in the hobby knows that it is a huge project (so huge that up until this point no one could gather the resources to make it happen). We're not charging a dime right now because as Mike pointed out earlier, we know that it's not ready. But we are getting there, slowly but surely.

We hear what you are saying, and we are paying attention. The reason for the early unveiling was so that we could know straight from the horses mouth what our members wanted, and could then give them just that. We know the saying you can't please everyone, but we are shooting for at least 90%. ;)

Dave it is slowly, and I mean slowly comming along. So the answer is no they won't forget it. I see it being just part of the BCCA membership and free to BCCA members. But that means nothing right now for we are a couple months away from being online. We will start with the cans we know are not pictured in the USBC book.

I spoke with Mike at the Ohio minicanvention a week and a half ago. He's a very nice guy, belongs to the BCCA, is a very passionate collector who is building a great site that will benifit the hobby and its users. I have no problem saying "join his site" and depending on what the fee is, "the site will be worth it."

Prewar, The can Listings Will Be Searchable by Year As the Site progresses. I just want to establish a year of issue for the cans that is as reliable as possible. I do not want the year date on a can to be wildly inaccurate. I display the Cans in my collection by type and age. I Also love to see label progression ( and In many cases label digression ) Seems Like Some labels love to revisited their early roots..... Mike

just curious as to who these guys are ? A lot of concern and blah...blah.blah and not one mention of who they are? I would like to know if i know them or not . Also, for what its worth...I agree with Prewar on chronological order and cap-sealed on side panels. I havent given price too much thought as it is truly a daunting task ( Dave L.-That means BIG job ) , however I would hope that the completed auctions part of ebay and actual prices at shows are factored in at least as much as dealer tote prices are , but I will save any ideas on that end for another thread. I guess To Answer The Question Who Am I ? WE Etc Etc. My name Is Mike Farrell. I like beer Cans.. I am Putting together a Web Site. Hopefully a good one. I saw a need and I am trying to fill it. I have no allegiances to Anyone. I am Not a dealer. I am not looking to make a living off beer cans. I am not soliciting advertisements for my website. I am not advertising to sell or buy beer cans. I am not looking to sell anything you see. I just enjoy history and collecting. The Person you see posting Information is Larry Sheckell. He works for Me in my real business. The Photos are all nearly all Taken by my Daughter Catie. She is currently a photography student. Cans are also being listed by myself, and one other part time Web assistant.

I like Most of you began collecting as a teen. I got reacquainted with the hobby about 3 yrs ago.. I know very few other collectors. I Know most of the larger dealers and have purchased several quality collections. I particularly enjoy 16 oz. and test cans. I collect anything beer can from Prototype to Current national brands. Not much else to say. I am a private person with no agenda,,,,,Mike

Mike, The very topic of beer cans builds friendships. I sat a table with you for 20 minutes or so talking beer cans and feel like I know you enough to say you are a good guy and I'm glad I met you. That's what this hobby does and what it's all about , building friendship. I would guess with your website and if you keep going to shows you'll find yourself knowing a bunch of great people.

Your story of comming back to the hobby after an extended layoff sounds just like mine and a bunch of collectors in the Rusty Bunch. Welcome back.

Just curious at the cost of this software...$50 ? $100? $200?

I hope you doing it as a labor of love than trying to get rich because I doubt the latter will happen. When Kevin Lilek published his Opening Instruction book, which was huge and amazing for the hobby at the time, he wondered how many he should print. People said "yeah, yeah - I'll buy one!" and he almost published 2000 copies but cut it down to 1200. Then the book went on sale for $126 each... all the "yeah-yeah-yeah" guys dissapeared into the woodwork where they came from. He sold 300 off the bat and sales were sluggish after that. Good thing he didnt go all out and print the 2000 because he'd still have a 1000 leftover.

Mike,

Keep in mind that you can't please everyone and there will always be a few who think they could do it better, bigger, faster, etc. But you are the person actually doing it. And I for one love it. Keep up the good work. Let me know if you would like pictures of more Michigan cans and I'll send them over.
