The Lad and I

Postby menke on July 28th, 2010, 5:40 pm

Subtitled: It's Not About the Wherewithal, It's About the Fortitude!

I recently got the call about a special quart. Road trip!!1!

It started at dawn's first light.
Image
I knew it was going to be a long day when the mapquest put me South on I-81 for exactly 299.9 miles. Oof. Breakfast time!
Image
At least it's a pretty drive:
Image
Getting the cash on short notice was an issue. I ended up getting a cash advance at a bank; I knew I was in the Real Virginia when the teller gave me her best Delta Burke. Thenkh Ewwwww....

I endured the long drive, thunderstorms, redneck cars ditching all over the mountain, police nailing a guy for drive-off gasoline in the car next to me. My nerves were jangled a bit through all this, and then it all came together.
Image
I was united with The Lad, and immediately took him to lunch:
Image
Image
We got acquainted in a whirlwind romance through the day. I showed him the sights, including kudzu on the mountain:
Image
He reciprocated by picking up the tab for a tank of gas:
Image
Partway home I took The Lad to my old stomping ground, the Texas Tavern in Roanoke for a Texas Red Hot and Grape Nehi.
Image
Finally, it came time to consummate the quartship. After a 950 mile drive and getting home after midnight, I was going to get some for sure...
Image
This image has been pixellated to avoid incriminating or skeeving any potential employers, or any D.A. out to prosecute anyone in the Man-Can Love Association. I'll leave the rest to your imagination...
Image
Why drive a thousand miles and get nothing? Because I can!

It's a generic VA tax crown, the offgrade red Yuengling that came with it also had one. Both are presumed original, cans were untouched and sat 60+ years in an attic.

talk about "can porn"! :smt020 :smt023
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.

My tetanus is up to date; never leave home without it. And all you guys who can only imagine using the spout are being close-minded. Durtbagg certainly found a way around that. No lawsuits, the evidence is easily cleaned up, no unwanted results...

I don't know if I was in Lee County when I actually took possession. It was somewhere ~30 miles west of that point.

For whatever reason, some of these really odd chicago cans show up in SW VA. I wonder if that's what the trucks brought down before refilling with moonshine for the drive back to Chicago? There still are occasional busts of moonshine trucks, loaded down with gallon milk jugs full of it, headed up 95 to Baltimore and Philadelphia. It must have gone everywhere back in the day and most places still. Franklin County a bit east of there is still supposedly the shine capital of the country.

Anyway, I'm glad to keep you all entertained. Barry, what was your easy punch line?

Cap Sealed-protecting the both of us from further embarrassment.

A Lad in the sack is worth two in the bush.

Keglined for your pleasure.

Capone was crazy from syphilis,me...tetanus.

Me,driving it home.Literally.

As Pat Benatar would sing "just another notch in my wood beer (lipstick) case"

Almost as scary as the horse Jack Woltz found in HIS bed.(Godfather)

Some collectors identify their cans through distinctive scratches or rust, others, through distinctive DNA.

NAMBLA member (man-BEER love,that is!)

Some like their beer cold.Me?...sweaty hot.

Its not the size of the can,its the magic within.

Lonely? Call an "esquart" service.I did. (groan  )

and who could forget the signature line:

Why drive a thousand miles to get lucky? Because of this can!

I kept thinking something looked different about that lad and realized the "Ale" at the bottom is in a different font than either quart in the book or that I remember seeing for that matter. It's like the high profile 12oz cone. Probably a stupid question and an over-sight on my part, but is this a previoulsy know variation?
