Olive Drab cans

Postby oldmoneytexan on July 18th, 2010, 1:23 pm

Does anyone know how many OD cans there are? I know I can count them in the books, but there has to be several that aren't pictured. I thought it might be a cool (and different) specialty collection. I know it would be uber expensive, but I think they have a cool story. Does anyone specialize in them?

These are my 6. I say 6 because of the Schaefers. It is the same label, but one is very shiny the other is true olive brab. I have waxed thousands of cans, and this is not just a waxed OD, the feel and color are different. The lids are shiny, even in the grooves where it would be virtually impossible to wax. I'm counting as a variation anyway.

I think Ed. Scoglietti has a pretty nice specialty collection of olive drabs. Care to chime in Ed?

I shot a video of my OD flats a couple years ago. There are MANY more OD cans, although I honestly haven't counted them up. Probably 25% more than what's shown in the book.

Awesome video. I keep forgetting my Ballantine because it's rolled and so clean. Does anyone have an "original" Ballantine that wasn't rolled? They must be rare as the dozens I've seen are all rolled.

Great stuff.
Does anyone have a Pfeiffer's OD that DOES NOT have the "Disregard statement withdrawn free..." on it?
Just curious!

There was a thread on here last year about original Ballantine's OD cans. I think there were 3 or 4 known to collectors on this site. I had one and traded it to Steve Potters. The photo of mine is below.

As the story goes...there was a find of OD cans (Schaefers, Luckys, Pfeiffers) in El Paso about 30 years ago. The cans were used as spacers in a shipment of furniture from England to an antique dealer in El Paso.. Based on that it appears that Pfeiffers were shipped to England (which counts as overseas) back in WWII.

If someone would post a photo of the patent number panel from a rolled Ballantine OD can you'll see a big difference in that panel of the can.

Leon,

On your Schaefer OD do you mean odd as in the date related to the code or the code itself? I have a Schaefer and the box it was shipped in. The box has a shipped on 11/15/45. I know the date has no relation to when the can was filled, but it appears they were shipping beer over seas after the war ended in May of 45 (May being the final surrender of Germany in the European Theatre). The can does not have a disregard statement on it.
