Berghoff Malt Liquor STOUT

#1

Post by RON BACON »

Does anyone know of someone that would trade/sell a "Berghoff Malt Liquor STOUT"? I need that to complete my FW Berghoff collection (except the Berg variation Chris has/ maybe 1 of a kind,?). After that I may go for the Rainbow series Old Crown cans. Help Rick, sell me that Red one!

Hey Ron, I need that STOUT too! Only 2 or 3 known???? Actually, I'm after the BERGHOFF STOUT Malt Liquor

Why drive 12 hour one way to dig Pre-Tax Tru Blu ales, Genny 12 Horse Longopeners, Gamecock Ales, Apollos, Neuweilers Bock, and Krueger’s Baldies when you can locally drive 10 hours round trip and dig Pfeiffer, Goebel, Drewrys and Strohs?

Labeling malt liquor "Stout" was a requirement in California and I believe in Arizona as well. Not sure about other states.

All of the California malt liquors from Maier and General were labeled "Stout", as well as Colt 45 from Phoenix. At first glance, I would assume that the Colt 45 from Phoenix was sent to California, but I am sure the Colt 45's with the Phoenix Suns schedule were handed out in Arizona only.

A lot of Chicago area and east coast brands were sold in CA in the 50's, so it would make sense that the Berghoff SML as well as Drewrys SML were sold in CA, too.

If I understand this correctly, cans of Berghoff Stout Malt Liquor and Berghoff Malt Liquor contained the exact same beer. The word "stout" was only added to comply with regional naming requirements. Is this correct? If I do understand this correctly, what is the word "stout" really supposed to convey to the consumer? Is this supposed to be some kind of reference to the alcohol content?
Focus: Cones and flats from Michigan, South Bend, and Fort Wayne. Foreign cans only if I bought them myself in the country of origin.

2023 Shows Attended

* Michigan Chapter Winterfest, January 14, Frankenmuth Michigan
* Cabin Fever Reliever, February 24, Mishawaka Indiana
* Buckeye, March 11, Toledo Ohio
* SummerSwap, July 21 & 22, Frankenmuth Michigan

Yes, you understand it perfectly, and it is a reference to the alcohol content.

Yes. Malt Liquor, Stout Malt Liquor and Malt Lager are the same product, just named differently to conform to state laws. Now a Malt Beverage is different. It is usually used to describe a flavored alcoholic beverage made from a malt brewing process such as Zima, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Seagram's Coolers, etc.

Oregon labeled malt liquors as stout as well. In some states anything over 3.2% alcohol was labeled as "stout"....some cold spring and schells cans are stamped stout on the lids but werent malt liquors....just more than 3.2%.

This gets kind of complicated sometimes. I am guessing some states did not care what the labeling was and accepted either. In Arkansas I have found numerous Country Club MLs of many variations and about 2/3 are stout and the rest are not. That indicates to me that there was no requirement.

In Texas, I have found lots of MLs, mostly Bulldogs and they are typically non-stout. At one dump we found some early Bulldogs that were Stout. I found a Berghoff ML at our famed Corky's dump in Texas. Unfortunately it was not a stout and condition is pretty ratty.
I'm dumping Jax flats-- it's a gas gas gas!

Wow, what a great can. How many are out there now?

Since the ML, Stout ML, Malt Lager all versus Malt Beverage(s) isn't complicated enough I'll throw out the Cereal Beverages made by some places during prohibition- Gluek made a CB, a Dark CB and Bock cereal beverage too... Andy

Just more proof that there is no better website in the Hobby!

If you take the time or at least make the effort to search out a topic or discussion, chances are good that you'll find something. If not, start one and you'll surely get someone to respond.
