Pre-War Pot Luck Box arrival post

Postby Rustomatic on December 19th, 2009, 4:17 pm

The Pre-War Pot Luck Box arrived today. I figured I'd start a new topic so we can post photos and discussion of the box. Wow! There are some great cans in the box. I dug right in and am in the process of checking my shelves and books. As soon as I'm done I will post pictures of my take and what I'm putting in.

Later,

Got it narrowed down to these 5. Will get it to 3 tomorrow.

The Brown Derby is from L.A. One of two Brown Derby's I don't have.

Here are the cans I'm Taking out: Rheinlander OI (has the black letters in the story logo), St. Louis ABC OI (big upgrade for my shelfer) and Brown Derby OI (LA version).

The cans I'm putting in: Tru-Blu OI, Propeller can and Monogram. The box is loaded with OI cans so I decided to put in two tough non-OI pre-war cans.

OK - I'm going to make this offical Pre-War Pot Luck Post....

The Rules:

1) Like rarity for like rarity/similar desirability for similar desirability: OK to swap an OI for a Lo-pro if equal rarity: use USBC book values
2) Post a picture of what you swapped out and put in.
3) No more than exchanging 3 cans
4) No 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 trades (ie 2 lesser cans in better condition for 1 rarer can in lesser condition)
5) Try to keep condition gr 3 or better. Sure, a gr 4 Rosalie or Trumps would be welcomed if it can survive the mail
6) Remember to have fun and not try to squeeze every penny out of the box. After all, we want to help out our fellow Rusty Brothers in adding to our collections!

Right now, there are 24 particpants.... still time to join in the fun by emailing me at: calcans@aol.com to get on the list.

Good Luck Tom on your overseas assignment. Thanks for guys like you to defend our GREAT country! :smt023 :smt023 :smt023

Box is on it's way to California and then Wisconsin! :smt026

If we ever do this again, i suggest that we include a camera in the box. That way there is no excuse for not promptly posting photos.

Things happen that cause unexpected delays, but I think we should shoot for the box to be on the move almost the whole time. I'll try to have it in my hands for no more than 72 hours. Maybe 73.

Just talked to Herman - he took pix but his power was knocked out for 3 days due to the winter storms - he'll post them soon.... the box is at Pete's and he will be shipping it shortly to Wisconsin...it goes back east from there and then to the SW.

Sorry, I should have posted pix by now... I dropped the box off to Pete week before last. I will call Pete and see what status is.

But please note, this is first time in 6 days I have had power and phone... It is still snowing here and we have recieved 4 plus feet of snow in the last week.

Anyways, Heres what i took and what I put back... cans on left are what i replaced...

OK... Pete shipped the box onward to Wisc today

UPS was closed due to the storms so he shipped USPS priority as it had been previously and paid 53.00 !

He was told the size of the box is a problem and really it needs to be packed in a box that better fits the USPS specs for size requirements, its off by an inch or so and making it much more expensive??

anyways, Pete says his Dig Cam is non operative... so about all that can be done at this point is list what he took and replaced

Pete removed a Horton Ale cone and Cereal Products Acme and put in a Salute Cone and Steinbrau by St Claire

Herman,
Thanks for the update.

53 dollars IS INSANE to ship that box of beer cans. I may end up searching for a different box or some other solution. If UPS works better then we'll just go with that and deal with possible weather delays.

Soemthing is very worng if it was $53.... I know the box does need to be changed because it's more rectanglar than square. They dinged me an extra $10 for that. Definetely need to send it a cheaper way... 2nd class? Ups? Greyhound?

Alex Draper (triplealex) just called me on his way out the door for a 5 day vacation. He said he just signed for a large box of cans but didn't have time to open it as he was traveling but wanted to 1) find out if this was the pre-war box. 2) if so, please be patient and he'll get to it early next week.
"No Dance or sprints to the truck this time but is doing the “Punching the Air” thing"

Looking for a specific Drewrys Horoscope can I traded away back in the 1990's. It's an indoor copper Taurus can, smoke damaged with the top lid partially cut out and pushed in to make an ashtray. Also looking for an indoor Berghoff LP cone I traded away around the same time, slightly yellowed with touchup around the contents info at the top of the can. Will trade well to recover these cans...

Cool - beercanman is next after Alex and will make the box more afforable to ship - whether that means going to UPS or changing the box size or if there's too many cans in it - to remove some and save them for later.

I believe there is about a case and a half of cans in the box... really a nice mixture of more common variations to real tough labels from across the US, should be something for everyone in there to be able to replace with like cans.

I dont know if Pete added anything else in, but I threw in 3 or 4 extra things, the box had plenty of room to add to, so agreed, best to try chaning the size of the box and get the shipping cost down.

It wasnt the weigh of the box that caused the high postage, it was the size, with the new USPS guidelines you really take a beating if you are just an inch outside of their scale, it increases dramatically with oversized parcels.

UPS!

I have an on-line account and once the box gets above a big size, weight is not that big of a deal, (size is USPS enemy) UPS is the way to to.

There is a driver in my neighborhood that comes around each day AND I just print out the label, tape it to the box and hand it to the driver. Most of the other postal drop off places will take a pre printed box with no questions asked.

can' to see it in the PNW

Michael - you're about 12th on the list... at this rate, you'll see the box maybe by B/G 2011! Seriously though, if we can move the box along at each location at no more than a week, you should see it by mid-March or April? Dont feel bad, I'm last on the list!
