I wonder if any of the states would not allow the zip or ring tops for a time. I also see this in the transition from ring tops to sta-tabs.

Re: Last year for tab top production?

As part of the team that is adding these late cans to USBC II, I am seeing a lot of these. Unfortunately, The book did not include many of the 80’s tab tops. Every show I go to, I find another half dozen we need to document. Many of the have a multi-crimp top. Many are from the larger breweries. Tha...

I did not see that one, but did see one from what I think was Oregon where they got a Golden Glow sign. They did not see how a big sign could make it from Wisconsin to Oregon, as the mistakenly associated it to the wrong Golden Glow brewery.

Thanx.

Re: Online Reference for the American Beer Cans 1975-1988 Book

As currently defined, the USBC Volume II Supplement is supposed to include the following: - all steel self opening cans. This includes zips-tops, ring tops and sta-tabs. - all aluminum cans that are zip-tops or ring tops. - all cans that were included in the printed book. This covers some aluminum s...

Re: Are the On-Line Auction High Prices Good For the Hobby???

Sellers are happy with the higher prices, buyers (like me) are happy with the lower prices. Unfortunately, too many of the sellers are the estates of former collectors or are done in that anticipation. What is is what is. Not sure much can be done about it. I will continue to go to every show I can ...

It is easier to change the logo than to change the management. Just because a dead cat bounces when it hits the ground, it does not mean it is alive.

That regulation looks to be current. I wonder how it has changed over the years. Is there a website that you can use to find that history? Also, is there a history of label designs that could be used as a master list of labels?

Thanx for posting Keith.

Re: Can 70s Tabs Make A Come Back?

I am interested in tabs in different ways: - first, to complete the on line version of USBC II, we are both finding cans that were not originally included and we are having problems re-imaging all of the original entries - especially the odd variants of common brands (e.g., Schlitz from Syracuse). -...

Two points: - I have switched my focus to tabs as they can still be found cheap. Re: Do LED or Incandescent lights affect color?

Sunlight contains all light wavelengths so it will fade cans faster (I think). Artificial light only contains certain wavelengths so it will attack certain colors. How the canning companies construct their colors may have something to do with it as well. Some of the chemicals in the paint may be sub...

On a different note, likely to create another **** storm, before the National income tax was established just before prohibition, the Federal government got most of its revenues from import fees and excise taxes. Excise taxes were mostly on alcohol. What would alcohol cost today if we had to get the...

Re: Will the new tax laws return shows to the primary selling venue for cans?

My father was a manager of IRS collection agents ending in the 70s. He said that average people doing reasonable things never had anything to worry about. I think that applies to most of us. The agents are not going for $1K problems, they are looking for $10K problems. Additionally, the IRS is focus...

Re: Will the new tax laws return shows to the primary selling venue for cans?

First, you only pay taxes on the gain (or loss). In this case, you get a 1099 for 600, but can deduct your expenses of the original cost of 600 plus the EBay fee of 90. You have a net loss of 90 which would reduce your taxable income. Second, if you argue that this is only a hobby and you spend more...

Given that the vast majority of cans in the Supplement now have 5 images, it seems likely that those cans that look identical but only one has 5 images are duplicates. A couple of possibilities: - there was a time when Oregon outlawed ring tops. This can may de a result of that. However, those cans were also supposed to have a 5 cent refundable note somewhere on the can. - it is an 11 ounce can, which is indicative of a west coast can (I cannot remember which stat...

The rule set that the USBC Supplement team is working under is that the minor canning company logo differences do not create different cans. Given the variety of these items it was deemed to be beyond scope to find every variation. In the tabs, where I spend my time there may be several variation of...
