Iroquois Indian Head Ale - tougher version?

This is a perfect topic for KB, but I'd love to hear other opinions as well. I finally landed the blue high profile version when I stumbled onto an ebay auction about to end last night. I've had the low profile version for years and have seen more low profiles than high profile. So I'm curious, whic...

Re: hey, professional ebay sellers

Eric, I stand corrected. In addition to Oregon, Alaska, Delaware, Montana and New Hampshire do not have a state sales tax. But that is not an absolute. Alaska and Montana allow local sales taxes. Delaware has a gross receipts tax. Having not dealt in a business capacity with entities in any of those...

Re: hey, professional ebay sellers

Matt and Chris, This is two separate issues. First, sales tax. It is not a matter of states receiving tax from unlicensed sellers. It is because every state in the union has a sales AND use tax. In theory, for every purchase made where sales tax is not charged (e.g. you buy a desk online from Amazon...

Re: Top ten Minnesota cans

Great thread guys. While I don't really specialize in any state I am very interested in cones for every state. I'm curious about three labels that made lists above; Red Wing, Grain Belt Ale and Grain Lager. I have one of each, but am wondering: are all variations equally tough or are there variation...

Re: Crown Find

Eric - Great information on the Legend numbers. I had never thought about it! Barry – Thanks for the ranking on the Gluek’s crowntainers. I’m curious about the alcohol statements “By Weight” vs “By Volume” and why one version is more difficult than the other. I guess this is another ‘State’s require...

Re: Crown Find

As a general rule, 5% variations are less common than 3.2% and 4% versions. I believe this is a tougher variation. It was not listed on the BCCA cone top catalog (circa mid 80s). Nice find!

Re: Rainier black-out cones from pre-Tahoe dig

Thanks Jim! It is probably something I meant to print at the time but missed doing so. More variations to be on the lookout for at Canvention. Especially for the two Rainiers in this thread. I'm sure you'll hit me with more "did you know about xx variations?" in ABQ. Vegas has set the over/under at ...

Re: Rainier black-out cones from pre-Tahoe dig

I hadn't thought about the plant codes and dates. I know that is a thing with Blatz, Milwaukee Club and Schlitz cones (Continental's plant No. 52). There are also midwest cones that a single letter following the plant number (e.g. plant 64 or 73). Of course I couldn't resist another look at my Raini...

Re: Rainier black-out cones from pre-Tahoe dig

Great info Charlie. While all of my Natural Malt variations, from 1935 and 1936, have the permit number, none of the Genuine Lager variations, dating from as early as April 1938 (THANK YOU Rainier for date stamping your cans!) - except one. The underlined 3.2% version, date stamped 6-11-38, does inc...

Re: Awkward Alcohol Statement, Old Style Cone Top

Jim, I've never seen anything like this! My guess would be that someone at the brewery who had to deal with State alcohol regulators worded it as a big CYA. I would be interested to hear Matt Menghini, Neil K. and Candog's take on this. Yet another reason to turn over every cone, no matter how commo...

Re: So what will you be looking for at Canvention?

Cone tops! New labels, variations and upgrades. More specifically a displayable dumper (and affordable) Apache. Hoping ABQ does for my SoCal cone variations what Portland did for adding Rainier alcohol variations (e.g. the ABC World's Gold Medal variations I need). I'll be the guy sitting on the flo...

3.2% versions I have: L180-10 underlined version, no Cap-Sealed panel. Mine, like Matt's above, is very clean and came from Dan S. in Portland. I believe he had four of them there. I was told that these were specifically for sale in Colorado. L180-10 Cap-Sealed panel, PATENTS APPLIED FOR above Cap-S...

What's It Called?

Please forgive me if this has been discussed before, but with the DGR update I'm trying to classify the type of cone like the Heileman's Old Style 177-13. Apparently it is not unique as the Supplement now includes an ABC (designated as 150-00) with the same type of cone. So what is it called? Does i...

Re: Various conetops

Good post Eric. I'll add my two cents to what Jim has not already addressed and I have some knowledge of. Love that the DGR got mentioned as a source document! This is great stuff! I hadn't realized that there was a Patents Applied For above and below Cap-Sealed on 169-30. Just for timeline purposes I do not have the flat but have the tab version (U-tab) from Drewrys. I also have a later tab, with only Famous Premium Beer, that is Sterling DBA Associated.

Re: Unlisted Schlitz FBIR Cone Top

I agree with Neil that this is a tougher variation. I have this one, as well as the 4% and 4 3/4% FBIR variations. The USBC was a massive project. I think you cannot take a variation not being pictured as a definitive for rarity. There are many 'major minor' variations (e.g. alcohol statements, brew...

I saw it (L156-2) on your Conehead Composite (JH #1520). Maybe that was a may exist/needs to be identified item? Agreed on 156-5, hardly see it.

Leon - Is this the version with or without the 3.2-7% alcohol statement? I have the alcohol statement but have never seen it without.

Jim - I agree that the Export variations are easier to come by. Which is tougher, the non-alcohol version of the can pictured above or the Master Blended Beer (156-5)?

Give me an honest dumper any day! I traded for this one at Canvention in Omaha. Notwithstanding the attic find, this is still a very tough can. What surprises me is the number of bids for a repaint.
